What is Children’s Dentistry?
Children’s dentistry is a specialised field of dentistry that focuses on the oral health of children from infancy to adolescence. This includes the proper management of orofacial issues related to medical, behavioural, physical, and developmental disabilities.
As with other clinical areas of dentistry, dental treatment of children falls within the same scope of the general dentist, the dental therapist, and the oral health therapist.
When Should Children Visit a Dentist?
Children should visit a dentist as early as possible. This is so they become more comfortable around a dentist and, more importantly, their oral health can be attended to early on in life so they can grow and progress with healthy teeth and mouths.
Seeing a dentist right away will also allow us to diagnose any orofacial problems related to medical, behavioural, physical, and developmental disabilities.
Ideally, their very first dental appointment should happen before the age of two or shortly after the first baby tooth comes through.
