A dental crown is a prosthetic device created from porcelain or ceramic. It is used when a single tooth is damaged and fractured. A dental crown covers or caps a damaged tooth to provide it with additional strength. It may also be placed to improve the alignment or appearance of a damaged tooth.
Like a crown, a dental bridge is also a prosthetic device but is used when one or more teeth are missing. It permanently replaces a set of missing teeth with false teeth. As the name implies, they bridge the gap created by missing a tooth or a set of teeth. They are usually made of porcelain or metal or a mixture of both. They are fixed in place and can be an alternative to dentures.
Do You Need a Crown and Bridge Treatment?
Crowns are recommended if you need to restore a cracked or fractured tooth, replace a large filling, cover an implant, or strengthen a tooth that has had a root canal. Their colour and texture can be custom made to match your existing teeth.
Bridges on the other hand are recommended when you lose one or more teeth. You might need a dental bridge if you have a missing tooth or teeth and have healthy teeth on either side of the gap left by the missing teeth.
What Happens During A Crown and Bridge Procedure?
During a dental crown procedure, the tooth is filed down and reshaped to become smaller. The surface is then cleared of decay and the structure is restored so it can support the crown. Once this is done, the dental crown is placed on the surface and cemented in place. It improves the strength of a tooth dramatically as it serves as a cap over the newly shaped tooth.
To start, teeth on either side of the gap are prepared by removing decay and ensuring that any gum disease is treated. Then, the two teeth on either side of the gap are filed down and reshaped to make it easier for the dental bridge to be placed. Once done, a mould is taken so a bridge can be made. You may get a temporary bridge while waiting for your permanent one. Once your dental bridge is ready, it is cemented onto the two teeth that were prepared at the start of the procedure.
What Are Alternatives to Dental Crowns or Bridges?
False teeth or partial dentures can be alternatives to crowns and/or bridges. These are removable for cleaning. Likewise, dental implants may also serve as alternatives.
We will provide you with everything you need to make a well-informed decision.
